For more than ten years, a family thought college expenses were covered. Since their grandson was eight, his grandparents often reassured him and his parents that his education was paid for. They showed them a special account with his name on it and took pride in the fund. The amount wasn't a small sum either, with about $140,000 saved over 13 years.

That sense of security disappeared just days after the teenager graduated from high school and got his acceptance letter to a state university. When he called his grandparents to share the news, they asked to meet in person. Instead of celebrating, they told him the college fund would be used to pay legal fees for his cousin, a 24-year-old who had just been arrested for the third time.

The grandparents explained their decision clearly. They said the cousin was "in crisis" and that the legal fees would use up most of the fund. They told their grandson, "Family helps family," even though they had promised for years to support his education.

The news hit hard right away. The teenager, who had always done well in school and avoided trouble, left the meeting in tears. His parents were stunned to realize how much they had relied on the promise. They had bought a smaller house, delayed saving more for college, and thought the biggest expense was already handled. Now, they might need to remortgage their house, use retirement savings, or have their son take out loans that could last for decades.

When asked, the grandparents admitted the money was legally theirs. There was no contract. Despite years of promises, the account had never truly belonged to their grandson.
